 STATEMENT
In my landscape painting I am influenced by the northern European tradition, from Caspar David Friedrich through to Rothko; my use of paint is expressionistic, reflecting my mood at the time of painting.
The interplay of light and colour is a constant theme in my work and I am increasingly focussing on landscapes seen through a frame of darkness. The movement of lines and marks is important. This is a result of my preoccupation with scenes and things seen fleetingly: glimpses which capture the essence of landscape.
In my still-life painting, influences include Matisse and Braque. I find that representation is always moving towards, and hovers on the brink of, abstraction. Strong, vibrant colours predominate and occasionally landscapes I have seen are recalled in the background.
I am interested in light and colour seen as if through a window. I very often want to try and achieve the feeling of a landscape that is seen in the far distance and somehow always looks magical as if you can never actually get there. |
